Professor Jerry F. Junkin
Director of Bands
Professor Jerry Junkin serves as Director of Bands and the Frank C. Erwin Professor of Music at The University of Texas at Austin, as well as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Dallas Wind Symphony. Professor Junkin became conductor of The University of Texas Wind Ensemble in the fall of 1988. In addition to his responsibilities as Professor of Music and Conductor and Music Director of the UT Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds, he serves as Head of the Conducting Division and teaches courses in conducting and wind band literature.
He is a recipient of the Texas Excellence in Teaching Award, presented annually by the Ex-Student's Association. Additionally, he received the Outstanding Young Texas-Ex Award also from the Ex-Student's Association in 1996. Under Mr. Junkin's leadership the UT Wind Ensemble has performed highly acclaimed concerts before the College Band Director's National Association (three times), The American Bandmaster's Association (twice), the Texas Music Educator's Association (four times), and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles in Manchester, England. Maintaining an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician and lecturer, he has appeared in those capacities in some forty-five states, Western Europe, Asia, Canada and Australia.
Mr. Junkin has served as President of the Big 12 Band Director's Association and is a member of the Board of Directors of The John Philip Sousa Foundation, is Vice-President of the American Bandmasters Association, and he is also Vice-President of the College Band Directors National Association.
Dr. Robert Carnochan
Director of the Longhorn Band
Dr. Robert Carnochan is the Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Longhorn Band at The University of Texas at Austin. His responsibilities include directing and coordinating all aspects of the Longhorn Band, conducting the UT Symphony Band and teaching undergraduate conducting.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Towson University (1986), a Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from The University of Colorado at Boulder (1993), and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin (1999). Prior to his recent appointment at UT, Dr. Carnochan served on the faculty at the University of Colorado, Northeastern Oklahoma State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, and began his career as Director of Bands at Dundalk High School in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Carnochan is active as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor throughout the United States and maintains memberships in the Conductors Guild, the College Band Directors National Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association.
Dr. Scott S. Hanna
Associate Director of the Longhorn Band
Dr. Scott Hanna serves as Assistant Director of Bands at The University of Texas at Austin, Associate Director of the Longhorn Band, and Music Director of the UT Chamber Winds. In the School of Music he teaches courses in conducting and chamber music. Dr. Hanna has appeared as guest conductor with Dallas Wind Symphony. He is also the director of The University of Texas Longhorn Music Camps, which provide the opportunity for musical growth to over 1200 young musicians each summer.
He holds the Bachelor of Music Education and Bachelor of Music Performance degrees from Louisiana State University and the Master of Music Education and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to his appointment at The University of Texas, Dr. Hanna taught in the public schools of New Braunfels and Austin, Texas.
His professional memberships include the College Band Directors National Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Kappa Lambda.
Mr. Damon Talley
Assistant Director of the Longhorn Band
Damon Talley serves as Assistant to the Director of Bands at The University of Texas, where he oversees the Longhorn Basketball, Volleyball and Concert Bands in addition to his duties as Assistant Director of the Longhorn Band. Prior to his appointment at The University of Texas, Mr. Talley served on the faculty of the University of Michigan as Assistant Director of Bands, where he also earned the Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting. In addition to his duties at the University of Michigan, Mr. Talley served as Music Director and Conductor of the Dodworth Brass Band, a professional brass ensemble based in Ann Arbor, MI. Their recording, released on Best Classical Records, received favorable reviews from publications including Gramophone magazine. Prior to his graduate studies, Mr. Talley taught in the public schools in Austin, at both the middle and high school levels. He earned a Bachelor''s degree in Music Studies from The University of Texas, and was a member of the Longhorn Band. He has served as an adjudicator and clinician for marching and concert band competitions in numerous states. Mr. Talley is an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi music fraternities, and holds professional memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association and the Texas Music Educators Association.
